According to a senior official at the National Bank of Cambodia (NBC), the microfinance sector has been playing a significant role in promoting economic and social development, particularly the decrease of poverty in the remote region. The government has supported the sector by outlining a clear development-oriented strategy which allowed the sector to grow their operation in a secure and sustainable. The effort of NBC and the financial institution in offering loans to consumers in establishing business is what led to this outcome so far. 58 commercial banks, 9 specialized banks, and 86 microfinance institutions are currently present in Cambodia.
