Q1 iron, steel imports climb 11%

According to provisional data from General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE), iron and steel were imported into Cambodia worth approximately $93.292 million, an increase of 10.95 percent year over year, in the first quarter of 2023. Last month, the kingdom imported $34.213 million worth, up 24.6 percent from $27.464 million in February 2023. According to Trading Economics data, back to 2021, Cambodia imported iron and steel from notable sources including mainland China, Vietnam, Laos, Japan, and Thailand. The kingdom’s construction sector has witnessed a modest resurgence year to date, supported by a pick-up in activity on larger developments and is predicted that iron and steel imports will keep increasing, as stated by Cambodia Constructors Association general manager and secretary Chiv Sivpheng.
