New CPS 70 rice set for 2024 harvest

Cambodia's Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI) plans to harvest 600 tons of Champei Sar 70 (CPS 70) rice seed in 2024, and distributed to agricultural departments, farming cooperatives, and private companies. The institute has developed a genetically pure variety, produced 20 tons of seed so far, and is now ready for widespread distribution. The Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Fisheries aims to promote three varieties next year, including CPS 70, luxury Phka Rumduol seed, and Sen Kraorb 01 fragrant variety. CPS 70 is a light rice variety that is not as seasonal and can be produced in less time, saving on labor and material costs. The Cambodia Rice Federation secretary-general, Luna Yeng, believes the development of new varieties provides more options for farmers, but it may take time for the market to accept it. Samrong district farmers are eager to experiment with the new variety and hope it finds a market.
