Cover crops transform soil, boosting Kingdom’s farmers

Cover crops are a sustainable alternative to synthetic fertilizers, enhancing soil health and benefiting farmers. Cover crop cultivation is currently used by over 1,550 households in Battambang province, resulting in increased yields and sustainable soil management. The Cambodian Conservation Agriculture Research for Development Centre (CARDEC)'s primary focus is on growing cover crops to reduce plowing and promote sustainable soil management. These crops absorb CO2 from the atmosphere, assisting in the fight against climate change by lowering greenhouse gas emissions and encouraging carbon storage in the soil. CARDEC is successful in the districts of Banan, Ratanak Mondol, Sangke, Samlot, Kors Kralor, and Sala Krao. The Cambodia Climate Change Alliance (CCCA) supports the cover crop initiative, which focuses on increasing farmer capacity, increasing agricultural production, and building cohesive farming communities. The initiative's goal is to raise awareness about the benefits of cover crops and encourage more farmers to consider growing crops without plowing.
